Currently the Chief Legal Officer for Uptake Technologies, Matt also is Of Counsel to the firm, providing our clients with unique experience and insights to help them navigate and resolve some of their most challenging legal issues from an insider’s point of view. Matt has served as General Counsel for two publicly traded companies: The Original BARK Company, an e-commerce company focused on making life better for dogs and the people who love them, and Green Thumb Industries, one of the largest multi-state cannabis companies in the U.S. Matt also served as Deputy General Counsel for Groupon. During his in-house career, Matt has been through two IPOS—a traditional IPO with Groupon, and a SPAC IPO with BARK—steered companies through bet-the-company litigation, advised Boards and senior executives, managed employment issues and IP portfolios, and overseen international legal operations spanning more than 20 countries across the EMEA and APAC regions.
Matt began his career at Jenner & Block, an AmLaw 100 firm based in Chicago, before joining Prendergast Layden (now also a part of CROKE FAIRCHILD DUARTE & BERES), and eventually forming his own law firm. During his private practice years, Matt’s handled complex litigation matters in state and federal courts, conducted trials before juries and judges—including a record-setting jury verdict in Mercer County, Illinois. Matt’s clients included multi-national corporations, privately held companies, startups, technology companies, real estate developers, medical practices, and judges, law firms, and lawyers. In addition to his dispute practice, Matt provided outside general counsel services to businesses and high net worth individuals.
A lifelong soccer player, Matt represented the United States as a member of the U.S. Men’s Master’s Team in international competition in Israel in 2009, and Brazil in 2011. Matt currently serves as a Volunteer Soccer Coach at Lincoln Park High School.
